Bochum Stadtbahn is a light rail system in Bochum, Germany, consisting of lines U35, 302, and 310. U35 operates mainly underground, while lines 302 and 310 have both underground and surface sections.
Trains run at a frequency of 5 to 10 minutes during peak hours, and every 15 to 30 minutes at other times. The operating hours are extensive, from early in the morning until late at night, facilitating transportation across the city and neighboring areas.
Bochum is located in the east of the Ruhr Valley, between Essen and Dortmund. The public transport network of the city of Bochum, known as Bochum Stadtbahn. consists of train, metro, tram and bus.
The Bochum Stadtbahn is a light rail that serves the cities of Bochum, Gelsenkirchen and the surroundings of Herne , Hattingen and Witten. It is operated by BOGESTRA. (Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen AG), a joint venture between the cities of Bochum and Gelsenkirchen.
Like the city of Dortmund was included in the overall plan for the Rhein-Ruhr Stadtbahn in 1970. For the city of Bochum, included three routes that would intersect in Bochum Hauptbahnhof:
(1) a north-south line from Recklinghausen to Bochum and Witten, via Herne
(2) a line from Hattingen, in the southwest to the northeast in Castrop Rauxel, and
(3) a line from Gelsenkirchen in the northwest to the southeast neighborhoods of Bochum.
The Bochum Stadtbahn opened in 1979 and currently has one single line with 15.3 kms in length and 21 stations. In service only the most important stretch of the north-south line.
There is only one line in service of the three originally planned, the U35, which runs underground throughout much of its course by Herne and Bochum. The second line is over just on its way through the center of Bochum but is used by the trams. The third route is finished only in the center of Gelsenkirchen. That is, although there are sections in service, have not finished building.
Bochum Hauptbahnhof is the central station that has to accommodate the three lines running through the city. It has two levels, the upper level platforms for east-west ( for the tram use) and the lower level for the other two, of which currently is only service in the U35.
The U35 line circulates from 04:30 a.m. to 01:00 a.m.
The frequency is 5 minutes from Hustadt to Riemke Markt and every 10 minutes tol Strünkede Schloss. Every 15 minutes after 20:00 hours.
Just like Dortmund or Düsseldorf, Bochum is part of the VRR tariff (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr). The ticket price depends on the number of zones, with Zone A for the city of Bochum and zone B and C for the suburbs. They can be purchased at vending machines and kiosks with symbol "VRR" , BOGESTRA offices and bus drivers. The machines are in front of the platform and trams. The BOGESTRA Sales Office are in front of the central station.
Before boarding the train, tram or subway be sure to have your ticket stamped because the penalties for not doing so are very high. Stamping machines are orange and there on the platform, on trams and on buses.
