The easiest way to get around KL: two driverless MRT lines, three LRT lines, an elevated Monorail and an electric BRT link neighborhoods, malls and office districts with high frequency and bilingual signage. Here’s a clear —yet practical— guide to understand the map, pick the right pass, connect with the airport, and make the most of the network from your very first ride.

General info and how it works
The Klang Valley metropolitan area has an integrated system managed by Prasarana (Rapid KL and Rapid Bus) and MRT Corp. For visitors, the key point is that one family of passes covers MRT (Kajang and Putrajaya), LRT (Kelana Jaya, Ampang and Sri Petaling), KL Monorail and BRT Sunway. Main transfer points include TRX (MRT↔MRT), Pasar Seni (LRT↔MRT), Masjid Jamek (LRT↔LRT), Titiwangsa (LRT–Monorail–MRT) and USJ7 (LRT–BRT). Signage is in Malay and English, and in modern stations all transfers are covered.

Tip: download the integrated PDF map to your phone and highlight TRX, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek and KL Sentral. It will save you time and steps when transferring.
Main lines (what travelers use)
MRT Kajang (green line)
Runs Kwasa Damansara–Kajang. It’s GoA4 (fully automated), with platform doors and Siemens Inspiro trains. It’s the backbone for hotels and shopping: Bukit Bintang (walkway to Monorail), Pasar Seni (LRT transfer), Muzium Negara/KL Sentral and TRX (same-platform transfer with Putrajaya line).
MRT Putrajaya (yellow line)
Connects Kwasa Damansara–Putrajaya Sentral. Also driverless. Stops include Titiwangsa, Chan Sow Lin, and ends at Putrajaya Sentral (KLIA Transit link) — convenient for Malaysia’s administrative capital. Features a women-only coach marked in pink.

LRT Kelana Jaya (ruby line)
KL’s first driverless urban rail: Gombak–Putra Heights. Stops at KLCC (Petronas Towers), connects with Pasar Seni (MRT) and USJ7 (BRT). If you’re staying near KLCC or heading to Subang/Sunway, this is your line.
LRT Ampang & Sri Petaling
Share Sentul Timur–Chan Sow Lin before splitting: Ampang eastbound and Sri Petaling southbound to Putra Heights (interchange with Kelana Jaya). Great for trips between downtown and traditional neighborhoods, with stops like Masjid Jamek, Plaza Rakyat/Merdeka and Maluri.
KL Monorail (light green)
Runs KL Sentral–Titiwangsa across the “Golden Triangle.” If you need KL Sentral–Bukit Bintang with elevated views, this is the most direct and scenic ride.
BRT Sunway (dark green)
A 100% elevated corridor with electric buses linking Sunway–Setia Jaya and USJ7. Perfect for Sunway Pyramid and Sunway Lagoon, connecting with KTM at Setia Jaya and with LRT at USJ7.

Connection with KLIA (Ekspres & Transit)
From KLIA (T1/T2), take KLIA Ekspres (non-stop) or KLIA Transit (with stops) to KL Sentral. Ekspres takes ~28–31 min; Transit ~35–40 min. At KL Sentral you connect with LRT (Kelana Jaya), MRT (walkway to Muzium Negara), Monorail and KTM. Going to Bukit Bintang? Combine Ekspres/Transit + Monorail. Heading to TRX or the financial district? Transfer to MRT.

Schedules, frequency and best times
As reference, the network runs approx. 06:00–00:00 (Mon–Sat) and 06:00–23:30 (Sun/public holidays). Peak hours (07:00–09:30 & 17:00–19:30): 3–5 min for central MRT/LRT, ~7 min for Monorail, ~4–6 min for BRT. Off-peak: usually 5–10 min.
Best sightseeing times: start after 09:45 and return before 17:00 or after 19:45. For photos, sunset at KLCC and TRX is ideal.
Accessibility, safety and useful rules
MRT stations are fully accessible (elevators, level platforms, platform screen doors); underground LRT also has barrier doors. KL Monorail has upgraded key stations like Bukit Bintang with escalators/elevators. There’s a women-only coach on MRT Putrajaya and KTM Komuter, marked in pink. Wheelchairs and strollers are welcome; BRT and buses provide ramps and dedicated spaces.
Rules: no eating on platforms or onboard; keep bags clear of doors; scooters/bikes restricted; only service animals allowed. The system is safe and well-patrolled; follow staff instructions during incidents.

Typical routes to explore KL
KLIA → Bukit Bintang (no taxi)
Take KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral, then transfer to KL Monorail for Bukit Bintang. Total ~50–60 min with transfer. With large luggage, allow an extra 10 min for walking corridors.
KL Sentral → KLCC → TRX → Batu Caves
KL Sentral → KLCC: LRT Kelana Jaya (10–15 min). KLCC → TRX: walk to Pavilion/Bukit Bintang, then MRT Kajang 1 stop to TRX. TRX → Batu Caves: MRT to Pasar Seni, then switch to KTM Komuter (Batu Caves line). Allow ~45–60 min from TRX.
Sunway Lagoon (families)
Use BRT Sunway (USJ7 ↔ Sunway–Setia Jaya). From Subang/USJ, change at USJ7 (LRT); from the northern network, take KTM to Setia Jaya. Avoid midday heat; afternoons have shaded walkways.

Park & Ride and moving by car
Driving from the suburbs? Park at Park & Ride stations (MRT and several LRT). MRT lots usually have a daily flat rate for metro users; others vary by operator. Ensure your card has enough balance to validate in/out and keep the discounted fare.
